Price Variations in Online Auctions $114.71 In a thick market with a large number of homogeneous goods, it is often assumed that prices tend to converge. This assumption, however, does not hold in the context of online auctions. The goal of this work is to investigate how different factors may contribute to the auction price variation in a thick market. My approach is to systematically examine both the supply and demand side. On the supply side, both seller expertise and selling strategy influence the auction price, while seller expertise also affects how sellers develop their selling strategy. Likewise, on the demand side, both bidder expertise and bidding strategy influence the auction price, while bidder expertise also affects how bidders set their bidding strategy. The effect of these factors on price tends to vary across different levels of quality uncertainty. The Revelation of Bidder Information in Online Auctions $96.59 This book is based on a Ph.D. dissertation written at University of Mississippi. It investigates the decision about the revelation of bidder information in online auctions. It makes a novel contribution to the literature by investigating the relationship between bidder information asymmetry and bidder experience level. Bidder information is a signal about the experience level of bidder. Bidder experience affects the strategic decisions of both buyers and sellers. Using data from 500 Egyptian antique auctions (a common value auction) and 500 laptop auctions (a private value auction), following main results are identified. First, in common value auctions, sellers earn higher average prices when they conceal bidder information. In private value auctions, sellers generate higher average prices when proportionally more inexperienced bidders are present, regardless of whether or not they reveal bidder information. Then, in common value auctions, late bidding is observed more frequently when bidder information is revealed. Late bidding is relatively less common in private value auctions than in the common value auctions, regardless of whether or not sellers reveal bidder information. Hotels at Online Auctions $96.59 The Internet has been found a powerful tool bringing about many opportunities but also threats for nearly every industry. The new and complex variety of online distribution channels that have emerged in the last years poses a challenge for the tourism industry. Moreover, the ability of handling and choosing among them effectively has become a critical success factor for hotels. The distribution of services on online auction platforms, such as eBay, is already utilised professionally in the field of tourism. Low entry and exit barriers as well as low distribution costs are major incentives for using this distribution channel. Sales on a larger scale, however, entail increased administrative efforts. For this reason online auction tools have been developed with the aim of facilitating auction management for sellers. For this study 1,074 auctions of Austrian accommodation offers on eBay, being sold by 68 different hotels from all over Austria, have been analysed in order to identify the most important success factors for selling hotel offers via this distribution channel. In 2000 Forrester Research estimated that B2B online, reverse auctions would reach 52 billion in revenue by the end of 2002. A benchmark study by CAPS Research stated that 1,5 of todays purchases are made through electronic auctions.Even studies considered conservative believe that 10 of all procurement budgets, which total 4,1 trillion in the U.S., could be spent through reverse auctions. That would mean over 400 billion spent through reverse auctions would create savings of up 50 billion, taking into account a conservative savings rate of 12. These savings make up 0,5 of the USGIP. These are impressive numbers for a simple procurement tool, and they have persisted through the end of the online hype and the decline of the new markets in 2001 and 2002.
