Satellite Television Helps One Travelling Couple

Fred and Prudy were a retired husband and wife in their middle ages. They had both recently qualified for the senior citizen's discount available everywhere and they weren't afraid or ashamed to take advantage of them. They had spent most of their life working and living in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Like many Americans that reached their age, they flocked southward and bought a nice property in Bradenton, Florida, when they retired. Although they did sell their home in Wilkes-Barre, they had children living all over the northeast that they would go and visit in their beautiful recreation vehicle.

Fred had worked in the management division of a successful coal company in the area of Wilkes-Barre. He had been working at a time when coal was in high demand as an alternative form of energy, and there were still extensive layers of coal in the mountains surrounding the area. He had been a hard and determined worker, and he had been fairly reimbursed for his work. He had started playing around with the stock market at a young age and had expanded his portfolio greatly over the years. He had over a million dollars tied up in stock and he liked to stay informed throughout the day from either Bloomberg or CNBC on his satellite television.

Prudy had been a nurse at the local hospital in Wilkes-Barre. She had switched from full-time to part-time following the birth of their first daughter. A couple of years later they had a son, and shortly thereafter a younger daughter. With a total of three children to look after, she quit the job so she could be at home full time to raise the children. Fred's generous income and their savings helped to make this possible.

In the summers after they moved to Florida they would always get into the camper and head north to visit their children and the various national parks. Two of their children lived around the Boston metropolitan area, and the youngest daughter lived in Newport, Rhode Island.  In the summer of 2004 they decided to head north through western Massachusetts and into Vermont. From there they would head east to New Hampshire and Acadia National Park in Maine. Then they would head south following the coast of Maine and New Hampshire to Massachusetts.

Fred was very cautious about his stocks and he had a professional broker on speed dial for when he needed to buy or sell something. He had outfitted the recreational vehicle with a satellite dish so that he could stay on top of the markets every weekday. He especially liked to watch Mad Money on CNBC at the end of the day.  As they navigated through the northeast, Fred was very pleased because his stocks were gaining value daily. By the time they reached Maine, it wasn't the stocks that Fred was worrying about.

Prudy had been monitoring the national news regularly when she was riding shotgun. All the major news networks had started talking about the serious threat that tropical storm Charley could pose for the state of Florida. They decided to call off the stops at their children's places and start the long trip back south.

When Prudy saw that the storm had become a hurricane as they were speeding down I-95, she called their handyman and asked him to board up their place. The storm made landfall when they were close to Brunswick, Georgia and they decided to pull over and wait there. The next morning they watched the horrifying pictures of the storm damage from the comfort of their bed in the RV. After a couple days, they returned to Bradenton to find their home had only suffered minor damage.

They were thankful that they had the satellite television access so that they were able to know about the storm while they were far away from home. Although their house would need some repairs, they were happy that they were safe and healthy and so were their friends and neighbors.
